Frequently Asked Questions
What is an HS code?
HS stands for Harmonized System — a standardized numerical method for classifying traded products. Maintained by the World Customs Organization (WCO), it is used by over 200 countries. The first 6 digits are universal. Countries add further digits for their national tariff schedules.
How do I find the duty rate for my country?
Select your country from the dropdown, then search for your product. Each result shows a direct link to that country's official customs portal where current duty rates are published. Duty rates are country-specific and change independently of the HS code.
What is the difference between HS code and HTS code?
An HS code is the international 6-digit code set by the WCO. An HTS code is the US-specific 10-digit extension used for US import classification. The first 6 digits of any HTS code are identical to the HS code. Other countries use different names: CN code (EU), NCM (Mercosur), AHTN (ASEAN), HSN (India).
How often do HS codes change?
The WCO updates the Harmonized System every 5 years. The current edition was adopted in 2022. The next revision is scheduled for 2027. Individual country duty rates can change at any time through domestic legislation, independent of the HS code revision cycle.
Why does my country use more than 6 digits?
The WCO's 6-digit code is the international minimum. Countries extend it for their own purposes: the US uses 10 digits (HTS), the EU uses 8 digits (CN), India uses 8 digits (HSN), China uses 13 digits. The first 6 digits are always the same as the international HS code shown in this tool.
